At GESS, we believe that students should not only learn about the world, but also help make it better. Our Service Learning and Sustainability Programme encourages students to become responsible, caring changemakers who use their skills to support their communities and the environment.

Real-World Learning with Purpose

From their earliest years, students are encouraged to participate in hands-on projects that benefit others and help protect the planet. Activities such as mangrove planting, beach cleanups, community donation drives, and volunteering with local organisations give students a chance to step outside the classroom and make a real difference. Through these experiences, they develop empathy, leadership skills, and a strong sense of purpose.

Students are supported by our dedicated coordinators, who help them find meaningful service opportunities that match their interests. Students are also encouraged to start their own projects independently. Whether it’s advocating for mental health awareness, reducing food waste in the school canteen, or caring for the elderly, our students show that young people can have a powerful impact.

A Recognised Leader in Sustainability

Our commitment to sustainability is recognised internationally. GESS is proud to be a member of The Alliance for Sustainable Schools (TASS). We are also the first school in Singapore to introduce a fully recycled school uniform line, chosen with input from both parents and students. The uniforms are made from eco-friendly materials, with comfort and durability in mind at no extra cost to families.

On campus, we continually strive to minimise our environmental footprint. This includes installing solar panels, adding electric vehicle chargers, and building a new Eco-Garden where students can learn about ecology, farming, and healthy eating.

Student Leadership at the Heart

Student leadership is at the heart of our approach. Our Green and Care Committee, led by passionate students, organises projects and works closely with the school to bring new sustainability ideas to life. As part of the TASS network, GESS students also connect with peers worldwide to share ideas and solutions.

Service learning is not just a programme, it’s part of who we are. We teach students to ask, “How can I make a difference?” and provide them with the tools and support to take action. At GESS, we prepare students to lead with heart, think globally, and care deeply about the world around them.
