Vote for Michael!

Michael Lum, local writer and fellow alumnus

Perpetuating the philanthropic spirit of Mr. Gan Eng Seng, Michael Lum (Class of '72) offered free courses for victims of the economic crisis. He chooses to help not by giving them fishes, but by sharing with them the skills to fish.

He was noted for his public spiritedness - he conducted free pre-employment workshops for retrenched workers at his own expense to help them find jobs...

Michael is also the author for 'I Once Wore Diapers' and 'Who Broke My Rice Bowl' and have been returning to GESS to give speeches to current students and run workshops for the alumni.

And for his conscientious efforts, he has been nominated as one of the 10 'ABC True Heroes'.

If you wish to vote for him to be the 'hero of heroes', you could do so by sms:

SMS ABC<space><Hero's code><space><your NRIC No>

A Joyous Reunion!

The commitee with the guests that stayed till the last.

Seeing all GESSians (past and present), friends and guests having a good time and a joyous reunion is all worthwhile for the working committee, who has toiled in the past couple of months for this event.

OSA extends our thanks for all the support given by generous donors and everyone who has taken time off to attend our function.

A report of the event will be online in due course.

Let's have a look at the first set of photos of the night...

Word of thanks

Mr Sanjay Pala Krishnan, son of the late Mr R Palakrishnan has dropped us a word of thanks and encouragement. Thanks, Sanjay.

Dear students (both past and present) of Gan Eng Seng,

I would like to thank you all for the section that you have put up in memory of my father, Pala Krishnan.

I recall that he chose Gan Eng Seng because he liked the library there at the time. He had switched his PSLE choice from RI to Gan Eng Seng for this purpose. He was proud of Gan Eng Seng, and kept the badge on his desk at home.

Because he dared to dream, I hope you all will continue to dream and pursue your goals. Don't let small failures get you down for as he would say "a tiny disillusionment does not deny the contentment of summer". Turn your stumbling blocks into stepping stones - never give up.

All the best to your future leaders,
Sanjay Pala Krishnan

The New Paper's Express Yourself Contest

In Memory of the September 11, 2001 Disaster

"I wish to tell people not to take things for granted. Disasters may come to us one day. We must also remember those around us who need help." - Benjamin Khan when interviewed by The New Paper on August 26 2003

" A blur of colour, mentally engraved to remain
Then all was over, and the wailing began
Amidst the ruined foundations to sustain
That New York would never be the same again.
It was a debacle, to many involved;
To see the great flowers around which life had revolved
Crumble apart; to fall and dissolve
Testing man's valor and challenging resolve.

Great were the feats accomplished that day,
The unsung heroes did not delay
Far into the icy night, with none to survey
The lives they ransomed; their own as pay

The world was in momentary shock; no one explained
How the suddenness had caught them; thus silence reigned
A brief silence, then anger was entertained
The world had decided; the fight against terror ordained

The battle for justice began and shots were fired
The enemy was ruthless; but their plans backfired
With a determination and virtue to be admired
The defenders of peace victory they acquired.

But war would rage on, an eternal conflict for peace
For only when evil is destroyed can it cease
Many will suffer, for their torment can only increase
Some will survive; for most only death a release

Remember on this day many lives were ended
Mankind's service with their lives defended
Tell those you love, on them you have depended
Show your gratitude; your love unaffected."
