A Tribute to
our Oldest Gessian & Scout
 |
The spirit of Can Do, Will
Do, and Derring-Do
Mr. Chan Chon Hoe (centre) at the Finishing Point of the Big
Walk in 1998. Despite a heavy downpour, he completed the 10km
Walk together with fellow Gessians (who at times actually had
problems catching up with him!). |
Mr. Chan Chon Hoe passed away peacefully on 10 May 2003 as our
oldest Gessian and probably the oldest Scout in the world.
Mr. Chan attended Gan Eng Seng School in Telok Ayer Street from
1922 to1928, then known as Anglo-Chinese Free School. He became
its units Senior Patrol Leader in 1926.
In honour of his undaunted devotion and dedication to the Scout
Movement, the Scout Association presented Mr. Chan the prestigious
Sands Star Award during its 90th Anniversary celebrations in 2000.
In Feb this year, Mr. Chan was featured in the book "Scouting
in Singapore:1910-2000", in which the author notes: "In
December 2000, Mr. Chan, proudly wearing his old uniform, made his
appearance at Jamboree 2000, making history as the only person to
have attended the very first and last jamboree in the 20th century."
Mr. Chan is also probably the only person having completed the Big
Walk for more than 10 times since it was first organised by the
then New Nation. He was known as 'Mr. Walker' by the New Paper,
for his dauntless attempts in completing the 10km journey each year.
Many have also wondered and asked for the secret to his good health
at such a ripe old age, and his reply was - live a simple life,
don't take cold drinks after meals, and most important, don't gamble.
As an alumni member, Mr. Chan has always given his full support
and participation in most of the activities and events organised
by our School and Association.
The last time Mr. Chan visited Gan Eng Seng School was during the
Official Opening of our new school premises at Henderson Road, on
2 Aug 2002.
But in heart and soul, he has never left Gan Eng Seng School.
