The story is set in a crumbling, dangerous city, following an economic and political collapse, known as the Dead Time.

In the Invisible City, the rich hide behind electrified fences and hired guards, while the poor and the abandoned, separated in the Forbidden Territories and The Zones, fend for themselves, battling against starvation and cold.

Three children, Victor, Floris and Bradley, find themselves on these harsh streets, watched over by the Old Woman and with their companion dogs Hunger, Shelter and Fearless, which have come to accept Bradley as their leader and are fiercely loyal to him. Their lives are hard but they manage to get by, until one day Floris is kidnapped by bandits and they have no choice but to try and rescue her.
