Chinese Cinderella

Chinese Cinderella

Author: Adeline Yen Mah

Reviewed by Peh Yang Yu (2E)

This story depicts a scene of the writer’s childhood during the twentieth-century China where a civil war was on.

It was a time of fear, isolation and humiliation. The cause was not political upheaval but systematic emotional and physical abuse by her stepmother and siblings, and rejection by her father.

The story continues with her determination to survive the pain of a lonely and neglected childhood, while also emphasizing on her ultimate triumph over despair.

An autobiography that cannot be missed.
