Beauty World- 11 and 18 January 2008

On 11 and 18 January, the GESS Drama Club members and two groups of pupils from Secondary Two Express caught the 8pm staging of Beauty World---The Musical. Pupils were excited and wowed by the heartfelt singing and impressive set. They were there as part of the Literature Enrichment programme, and many of them could be heard discussing their favourite aspects of the show during the intermission. Here are brief reviews from two pupils:

Beauty World---The Musical was written by Michael Chiang with the music and lyrics composed by Dick Lee, and it was first staged in 1988. January 2008 marks its 20th anniversary.

Watching Beauty World--The Musical made me feel that music brings joy, love and laughter, for the production was both comical as well as touching. The story is set in Singapore in the 1960’s,  and is about a girl named Ivy Chan Poh Choo from Batu Pahat, who wants to locate her long lost father, but the only clue she was left with was a pendant with the words “Beauty World” engraved on it.  She then sets off to “Beauty World”, a famous cabaret in Singapore, determined to uncover the truth about her past. The theatre was filled with laughter numerous times during the show, as the jokes were side-splittingly funny and the actors had an impeccable sense of comic timing. There were also several songs that were delivered beautifully, and I was touched by the characters’ struggles to fulfill their dreams.

My classmates and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, and comments like “The show was great!”, “Wow I love the theme song…Cha Cha Cha!” were heard as we left the theatre. To me, it was a splendid show with an amazing set and cast. The actors must have rehearsed very hard for the perfomances, and I was especially impressed with Wan Choo, who was the hilarious, gossipy and kind-hearted maid who knew about everything that went on in “Beauty World”. Even though I do not understand Cantonese I burst into laughter each time she was onstage.

Beauty World---The Musical is a must watch for anyone of any age and if any theatre company plans to do a 40th anniversary restaging I’ll definitely catch it again.

My favourite character was Frankie Wong Fei Hong. He was a sweet and charming guy who remained loyal to Ivy. I was touched by his unwavering love for her. I was rather disgusted with Towkay Tan as he conspired with Lulu to drug and abduct Ivy. I enjoyed myself tremendously as the songs were catchy, costumes dazzling, dance choreography slick and acting entertaining and believable. It was a great night out.
